The Fensfeltet ore field was formed by a volcano some 580 million years ago. This area is world famous. Iron and rare minerals
were thrust up as magma from a depth of about 100km through the conduit of the volcano. The content in the hematite ore is approx. 50% iron, 4% REE and 0.2% thorium. During the last Ice Age the area was
covered with marine sediments, which formed a shield against most of the radiation from radioactive rocks. Large quantities of iron, REE and thorium in the soils and solid rock at Fensmyra. Cappelen and
the State have mining claims in parts of Fensfeltet. Thorium Norway is now carrying out analyses with a view to obtaining mining rights in Fensfeltet. At the outer edge of the deposit there are ores rich
in REE (Rare Earth Elements).
